The Adventures Of Mr Bumble

Welcome to Buzz Meadows, the family farm run by Bryce and Hazel, which is where the story of ‘The Adventures of Mr Bumble’ takes place. As winter’s cold grasp on the land begins to fade, March is a special time of year as we start to notice changes all around. Flowers start to bloom, the days grow brighter, baby animals have arrived at the farm and busy little bees are ready to spread their wings and fly! In the story we get to follow Mr Bumble on his exciting adventure to find tasty pollen and turn it into honey. Along the way he meets the brightest pinkest Hibiscus and the coolest, shadiest Sunflower to help him cool down.

If you’ve ever felt a bit nervous or afraid when a bee buzzes past, this story is here to help. As we follow Mr Bumble on his journey we get to learn that bees are not scary, instead they are hardworking helpers who keep our world full of colourful flowers, healthy plants and tasty fruits. Without bees like Mr Bumble, many of the things we love would not be able to grow. So next time you see a bee buzzing by, remember they are just like Mr Bumble. Instead of feeling afraid, try giving a little smile or a friendly wave – and don’t forget to say “Thank you” for all the work they do.

  1. Noel first got the idea to write ‘The Adventures of Mr Bumble’ when a pupil in his Nursery class was afraid of bees buzzing past in the playground. He thought if he could write a short poem to help one pupil that would be a job well done.
  2. After writing the small poem, Noel realised he needed a picture to show Mr. Bumble. He asked his good friend (and tattoo artist) Ricky Baird, if he could draw something for him. Together they created the joyful Mr. Bumble we see today.
  3. Ricky knew a friend who worked for a publishing house in London, England and sent the story to them without telling Noel – so he was very surprised when they said they wanted to turn the tale of Mr. Bumble into a book.
  4. Before they could turn the tale into a book, they asked Noel and Ricky to make some changes. They wanted to publish a book that was a story, not a poem.
  5. Together Noel and Ricky made the changes that were needed. Firstly the poem needed to be longer and Noel quickly got to writing. That is why the book rhymes so well, listen closely the next time you read the story.
  6. Once each page was written by Noel, it was given to Ricky to begin drawing a picture that can show young readers exactly what is happening.
  7. The book was always going to be called ‘The Adventures of Mr Bumble’ but before it was published it had a subtitle: Spring Is Here, Flowers Grow, Goodbye Snow.
  8. The book was given a subtitle because Noel had an idea. He wanted to make the tale of Mr. Bumble a collection of three books, each with their own adventure.
  9. The continuation of Mr Bumble’s great adventure is currently a work in progress and we are patiently waiting to see what Mr. Bumble might get up to next!

His buzzing can be heard over children’s full laughter and adults’ dull chatter.
Look! It’s Mr. Bumble flying up and over the tunnel.
Don’t be afraid when you see him fly by, give him a wave or pretend high five.
