On Tuesday 20th February 2024 Irish singer-songwriter Niall Horan kicked off his highly anticipated world tour ‘The Show: Live On Tour’ on home soil in Belfast to a sold out crowd of roughly 11,000 ‘lovers’ in support of his third solo studio album titled ‘The Show’ which was released in June 2023. The show has been a long time coming and his absence was evidently noticed by the eagerly awaiting crowd that had to wait six years for his triumphant return to Belfast – this is largely due to his last tour being cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Demand for this tour has exceeded even Niall’s own expectations with multiple shows selling out leading to additional shows in select cities and extending the show to new cities and territories. This did not fall short on Niall who constantly thanked the crowd for their support and while chatting to the crowd informed them of the one rule for the night “to leave with a smile on your face” and he made it his mission to put on a memorable show that the crowd would indeed walk away from happy. Hopefully you were one of the lucky ones in attendance to see the show, but if not hopefully this review will make it feel like you were there!

The night kicked off with the familiar sound of his 2019 track ‘Nice To Meet Ya’ which set the tone for the night and immediately had the crowd on their feet. The evening was filled with several stand out moments, but one of my personal favourites was when the entire audience turned the flash on their phone for the lullaby sounding ‘You Could Start A Cult.’ Another memorable moment was the fourth song of the evening ‘Small Talk’ having it’s chords and melody mixed into the iconic and downright legendary Stevie Nicks track ‘Edge of Seventeen’ which was met with a wild reception from the audience. Catching his breath between upbeat songs, Niall was able to captivate the crowd with simply sitting at the microphone with a guitar as was the case for a fan favourite ‘This Town’ which had him and the band sitting down for an acoustic set.

It could have been easy for Niall to deny his One Direction past – he is a well established and successful solo artist with three studio albums containing a combined 48 songs under his belt. Instead he chose to acknowledge and shine a light on his time in the band by singing fan favourite ‘Night Changes’ during his set. Not only did the song serve as an immediate throwback for the crowd by transporting them back to the days of 1D but it transformed the arena as a giant disco ball descended from the ceiling for the number.

The stage set up reflected the name of the tour: The Show and was set up to look like a theatre with a large white theatre curtain being used as the main backdrop along with screens that are used to resemble a headline banner with Niall’s initials and the city he is playing in proudly displayed in large and bold colour. Niall being the true showman that he is took the time to give credit to his band – introducing them one by one to the audience and having them play on their instrument of choice. The band never faltered and stayed on top form the entire evening – never missing a beat and showing the exact same enthusiasm that he had to be back on that stage. To mark the end of the night the theatre curtain came down and displayed ‘The End’ keeping in theme with the entire evening. A successful opening night of his world tour had been complete and he set out exactly what he wanted to do: ensure the crowd left the building with a smile on their face.
